Celebrate Cake Freedom Day, Saturday Sept. 19th

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Is it just us, or does it seem like our society offers us more to worry about every day. . .

Is your block being over-run with liberals/conservatives? Is your car a clunker? Is your computer spying on you? What’s going on with Kanye? Did Monsanto really come to town to “build” us better wheat, and what’s wrong with the wheat we’ve got already?

Sweet Pea Bakery doesn’t have the answers to any of these questions, and frankly we aren’t sure we want to know. But we can offer you a little break from the madness. . .

Celebrate Cake Freedom Day & support the Gallatin Valley Food Bank

Please join us Saturday, September 19th from Noon to 5pm to celebrate National Cake Freedom day. During this time, all visitors to our Main Street bakery can enjoy a complimentary piece of one of our delicious made-from-scratch cakes and free coffee from our friends at Lil’ Sherpa Java. We encourage you to use the time to enjoy your treat, reflect on the the benefits of a slower way of life, and maybe strike up a conversation with a neighbor no matter how liberal or conservative.

But wait, there’s more! As another way of strengthening community ties, this end-of-summer edition of Cake Freedom Day will double as a fund-raiser and food drive for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. The cake is free to everyone, but if you bring along a non-perishable food item or cash donation for the food bank you will be entered to win fun prizes. We will be drawing for a 9″ cake and giving out door prizes all afternoon. There is always additional need at the Food Bank as the holidays approach, so let’s work together to contribute what we can to our neighbors in need!

That’s it. No sales pitches, no politics, no celebrity gossip or planned obsolescence. Just an opportunity to relax a little and enjoy some really tasty treats with your family and friends. National Cake Freedom Day is an equal opportunity holiday, so all are welcome. Please stop by 2622 West Main Street on Saturday the 19th for your taste of sweet Cake Freedom!

For once, we can’t vouch for how they taste: Real US Postage featuring Sweet Pea desserts!

One of our favorite images, now available
as real US postage stamps!

Let’s face it. Snail mail just isn’t as flashy as e-mail. It can take days to arrive, and you have to spend all that time scrawling out entire words and complete sentences. Still there’s something really nice about getting a hand-delivered letter from a dear friend or a birthday card from Grandma. It means a lot to know that someone took that time out of their day just to send some love your way.

Now when you return that love, you can add some flair to the package with real US postage featuring some of our favorite images from the Sweet Pea Bakery collection. Our photostream gets a fair amount of attention, and we thought it would be fun to share.

Starting today, our gallery of stamps from Zazzle.com will appear on the right side of our blog, Flourish! Click on one of the stamps in the column to the right to see all our stamps. Send your correspondent a little extra love next time, or show your out of state friends that Montana isn’t totally uncivilized.

We’ve made stamps for birthday party and wedding invitations, stamps for holidays and just because. We’ll be adding to the selection as we sift through our photos, and may add gift items like calendars. Check out our first run, and let us know what you think.

A dispatch from the ground floor.

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Hi there. You haven’t heard much from the Sweet Pea bakers lately, and we apologize. But we do have a good excuse. We’ve spent the last couple weeks readying our new space at 2622 West Main as the new home for our bakery. We’re still waiting for some important equipment to arrive, but a lot has happened already, and we want to share with you!

The plumbers were in last week, installing sinks and upgrading connections. Seth has been finishing the floor, and the baker girls have been hard at work painting and finishing.

Progress 12/29

If fact, the little space has gotten quite a facelift, but you might still get the feeling you’ve been there before, and that’s okay. We’re planning it that way! As part of our business’ effort to minimize our impact every day, we tracked down fixtures and tables from some local business favorites. Our tables came from the original Rocky Mountain Roaster, and the oak checkout counter was custom built for the Owenhouse Bike shop. Besides these pieces being attractive, functional, and re-used, they come from some of Bozeman’s most popular and longest-lived businesses. We admit we’re hoping some of that good energy soaks in to our new home!

If you look close, you might notice a few things missing, too. Like that giant pizza oven that made bread and desserts in the basement Sweet Pea all those years. In fact, all the bread equipment is gone now; redistributed to great bakers around town (and the continent, the moulder is shaping hamburger buns in Mexico City). The big walk-in cooler and freezer are history, too, replaced by sensible uprights.

We had been working with some of the best equipment out there, but since the set-up was optimized for a bread bakery, we were wasting a lot of space, effort, and electricity using it to make desserts. All that great stuff has a new home now, and we just finished shopping for equipment that makes sense for our application.

This change helped us take a huge step toward our goal of being as efficient as possible so we can focus on baking. When we re-open, Sweet Pea Bakery will bake and sell more desserts than ever before, but we will do it using a third less electricity than we did a month ago! We don’t know if there’s anything to this carbon footprint business, but we are sure this makes sense for our business. The savings on our power bill will pay for the new freezer before the warranty runs out!

Well, it’s time to get back to work. Look for us to re-open in about two weeks and check back here for updates, as we hope to start taking special orders again sooner than that. Thanks for your patience with us, we can’t wait to show you what we’re up to!
